About

Welcome to Stanley’s. My name is Bruce, Stanley Melbourne Bruce. They named this place after me. Considering I was born in 1883 and died in 1967 that is quite something. Maybe it is because of my main profession when I took office as Prime Minister in 1923, making me the 8th Prime Minister of Australia.

I grew up in Toorak, Melbourne and after graduating from University of Cambridge, I worked in my late father’s business of import and export. In World War 1, I served in Gallipoli on the frontlines until June 1917 when I returned home wounded. Post service I became a spoke person for the Government recruitment efforts where I gained attention of the Nationalist Party and was encouraged by Prime Minister Billy Hughes to pursued a political career and was elected to Parliament in 1918. Some five years later and I am the Prime Minister.

Since we are located in the beautiful National Capital of Australia, I would like to point out that it was indeed I who moved Parliament to Canberra in 1927. Thinking of it, even the suburb we are in is named after me! While in parliament I implemented many reforms to the Australian federal system that strengthened the role of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Peace Officers and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research was established which was the forerunners of the Australian Federal Police and the CSIRO.

Post Political Career I became the first Australian to sit in the House of Lords in 1947 as well as the first Chancellor of the Australian National University. As I had a passion for improving global nutrition, I was also a key figure in establishing the Food and Agriculture Organisation.

As you can see my post political career took me away from Australia, but Canberra was never far from my heart. My last wish was to rest in Canberra. I died on 25th August 1967 where a memorial service was held at St Martin-in-the-Fields and was widely attended, including the Royal Family. My ashes were returned to Canberra and I was scattered on our Great Lake Burley Griffin.

Now move forward to 2017 and I have a local named after me! which I hope you enjoy a pint and some good tucker and remember how great Australia is and will be moving into the future.
